Show Notes

The Incredible String Band burst onto the folk music scene in 1966 with the release of their first album, aptly named “The Incredible String Band.” As an avid lover and consumer of folk, I had never heard anything like their songs. The band started out as a trio composed of Clive Palmer, Robin Williamson, and Mike Heron. Williamson and Heron composed most of ISB’s music. Palmer eventually dropped out, replaced by other musicians and the girlfriends of Williamson and Heron.

Signed by Electra Records, the group produced seven albums for the label, most notably their first four, which included “The Five Hundred Spirits or the Layers of the Onion” and “The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter.”

Through intermittent tours and appearances at prestigious venues like the Albert Hall, The Incredible String Band gained worldwide fans and international recognition from their humble beginnings in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Listen to Mike Heron’s lilting, whimsical “Painting Box” to get a sense of The Incredible String Band’s multifaceted musical range. Here’s my cover.

[00:00:10] When the morning of your eyes comes waking through my shadows leaving just a trace of twilight sleep I listen to the baby raindrops playing on my window and tell them gently this is not the time that they should weep for somewhere in my mind there is a painting box I have every color there, it's true just lately when I look inside my painting box I seem to pick the color my Friday evening's footsteps flooding dudley through this black town not far apart now from the world that I'm in my eyes are listening to some sounds that I think just might be springtime with naffetails between my toes on laughing at their for somewhere in my mind there is a painting box I have every color there, it's true just lately when I look inside my painting box I seem to pick up colors of you the purple sail above me gadgets all the strength of summer fishes stop and ask me where I'm bound I smile and shake my head and say my little ship is sinking but I kinda like the sea that I'm on I don't mind if I do drown or somewhere in my mind there is a painting box I have every color there, it's true just lately when I look inside my painting box I seem to pick the colors of you.
